What is one piece of advice you’d offer a woman entering this industry?
Find your voice – you don’t need to act like a man – be yourself and find a way to be heard. Take advantage of the fact you do stand out in a group – be articulate, on point and generous. If you do this consistently you will be noticed in a way men can’t compete with.
What do you enjoy most about your career?
The people I have the privilege of working with at my company and in this industry are great. Leading a passionate, smart, caring team makes it all worthwhile.
What do you wish more women knew about opportunities in our industry (i.e., what is a common misconception that should be cleared up to attract more women)?
Times really have changed across the board. Opportunities are there all over in traditionally male dominated positions – women can stand out – just be willing to work hard and do it. The lack of available workforce companies are experiencing helps swing the doors wide open.
How important do you think networking and/or mentorship is for women in our industry?
Networking is important for everyone. Follow people who will give you fair and honest feedback – and be willing to act on it. There were no women mentors early in my career but I was fortunate to find many men who wanted to see me succeed – not because I was a woman but because of the person I was and the competence I exhibited. Work hard, be informed about the business, and learn to both speak and listen.
What qualities that tend to come naturally to women do you think translate well into leadership qualities?
Desire to find common ground – and work in teams. Ability to listen and to not always need their idea to “win”
How do you – and/or your company – embrace diversity and inclusion in the workplace?
It is simply an expectation in our company.
Any advice for leading/negotiating in a male-dominated room?
This has changed so much in the last 20 years – I see it continuing to evolve. My advice is do you homework so you are knowledgeable – and speak up – early in meetings. Make sure you are heard.
