Controls Engineer

A controls engineer designs and develops all aspects of electrical control systems for automated machinery, and is responsible for the application and technical support of PLC and servo based hardware and software. Controls engineers are responsible for ensuring that plants create the best products possible in the most efficient manner. They are highly analytical and use these skills to examine and improve processes in order to increase productivity. At the same time, they are responsible for ensuring that all equipment is properly maintained. As they perform these functions, controls engineers must also be able to work with other departments and external parties to create and implement processes to increase the plant’s efficiency. The job title for a “Controls Engineer” may become more specific based on the needs of the employer, but some common listings include Manufacturing and Controls Engineer or Electrical Controls Engineer.

Job Duties

  • Prepare detailed designs based on written and verbal specifications of desired machinery function
  • Analyze plant processes, design and implement improvements
  • Troubleshoot problems occurring during development, assembly, testing or commissioning of machinery
  • Plan preventative maintenance
  • Work with others to detect problems and implement solutions
  • Maintain quality and safety standards are upheld

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Electrical, Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality product designs, including performance, timeline and project budget considerations
